On Tuesday Georgia and I got up on the old city wall and walked for the little stretch that was available. It was a very nice perspective on the roofs below. It was great to climb two mini towers on the ends of the wall to see a little more. Georgia was a bit cautious about doing down the “wrong exit,” but seeing a few other people emerge from the wrong exit was convinced to go.

After that we walked around dropping into various galleries and souvenir shops. Can’t believe it was almost 2 weeks since we left. Dropped into St. Nicolas Orthodox church. It is a bit tattered and needs some touch up.

A nice stop was Universal Universum shop that featured various souvenirs from Bali/India. Every country has these types of stores. What was different and impressive about this one was the quantity and diversity of the ethnic musical instruments they had in store. Drums alone, there was probably more than 30 kinds. We sampled many different instruments. In the basement there was a section with lamps using weaved branches and leaves. Very different and unique.

In the evening we walked around Rotermanni Keskus area near the post. Lots of interesting finds. The mix of new and totally dilapidated. Lots of seedy elements with perfectly proper British tourists taking a stroll. Really interesting architecture – basically an attempt was made to recover some of the port nasties and build up a pretty radical new buildings around it We will need to come back to this area during the day to see what it looks and feels like.
Isabella trying to crack the bicycle chain we use to secure our stroller downstairs.
