July 29th. A Break In

Today's highlight was during the 3.5 hour drive back from the Luton airport after picking up Michalka. As we set out on the road that resembled a more of a three lane parking lot, at around 7:50am BST local we got a call from our security monitoring system back home. They asked how we were. We said fine, not counting the traffic. Then they asked if is was OK that our security system was triggered a few minutes ago, around 2:42am EST. Hmm. Definitely not OK. We asked to call the police and they disconnected.

Over the next 20 minutes as we sat idle and helpless on the highway, security company had called back two more times to cheerfully inform us that now the sensors are triggered in the basement. And now there is someone walking in the office. They told us that they did inform the police so conceivably it was them walking around the house but they were not sure. We called Dan's Dad to try to see what is going on and also tried calling the local police. And just sat there entertaining various plans of action. At last, some 40 minutes later our police department called back to say that it was Dima. Phew!!!

The poor thing drove half the night to stay over at our place. Plain forgot that there is a security system in place that he had helped to set up about a month earlier. And, of course, when the music had started some seconds after arrival one typically is not in the mood to run off to find the security unit let alone remember the code to disarm. So he had a fun night over on his end too. Glad it is over. Some improvements to think about: like faster notifications to our cell phones and video equipment that connects to our cell phones so that we could be there on sight in spirit :)

Among many other things we saw on the highway was a burning car. Never seen one so close. The driver and passenger sides were burning. Looked scary. The driver was alive and outside. Cops and firemen did not get there yet. That amounted to 1 hour wait. The other one came from some repair work done on the railway bridge that got flooded in the recent rain. They've closed off traffic around for miles in every direction for that one. I am beginning to seriously wonder about UK's preparedness for rain.

Kids are absolutely overjoyed. They got a new toy - Michalka.

One last note. Luton airport. I wrote about it before. We are still trying to assess whether it is a reasonable alternative to others. Plane tickets are pretty cheap but there are weird other charges. Like 2 pounds for a passenger drop off. And 3.50 pounds for the first 30 minutes of parking. And 1.35 pounds for paying for parking with your credit card. I wonder if the bathroom has a fee too. Impressive example of nickel and diming if I've seen this. And it is still a pretty long drive.
